KUNUBALITantalite Columbite Au Sc REEALLUVIALGUYANA
Geology:x Area underlain by Lower-Proterozoic Barama-Mazaruni Assemblage gneiss and Mid-Proterozoic(Trans-Amazonian) granites. Middle-Proterozoic dolerite dyke and sills have intruded the basement complex. The above mentioned lithological units within the Kunuballi headwaters and the left bank area are unconformable covered by Tertiary White Sand of the Berbice Fm.
Mineralization:x Columbite-tantalite deposits were observed mainly in alluvial and eluvial environments in the vicinity of pegmatite occurrences; in the Kunuballi area concentrated in the bottom few inches of gravel and at the top of the clay in the creek alluvium.
Workable Au in the belt of Au-bearing rocks, between Puruni river and Kunuballi River. The quartz gold shows in the gravel of the creeks.
Work:x Webber (1940):  reconnaissance survey in the middle Mazaruni region and identified the Kunuballi occurrence as an integral part of the columbite-tantalite showings of the general area. attempted to roughly estimate alluvial reserves. Smith Bracewell (1945): linked the alluvial deposits with primary sources (pegmatites) which are thought to be associated with granite plutons. F.White (1953): The Kunuballi area was examined in by of the British Guyana Geological Survey after the neighboring Morabisi columbite-tantalite deposit was put into commercial production. F.White identified two localities which have shown anomalous values of columbite-tantalite and several outlying areas which are also mineralized. The Columbium Corporation, a private company from USA, commenced prospecting work in 1954. Reports of their work are not available.
Results: Columbite-tantalite alluvial potential appears to be of immediate economic interest & is amenable to gravity concentration techniques and therefore offers a likely low-cost mining scenario.
Heavy mineral concentrate contains (black sand) contains 12%-18% of Ta2O5 ratio 1:3 Ta,Nb. 1 cubic meter of solids contains avarage 1kg of heavy minerals. Gold is avarage 0.5g per cubic meter.
Lode potential of columbite-tatalite borne by pegmatites within gneiss presents both a scientific and economic high-interest situation.
Reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment sampling recommended followed by a gridded soil sampling programme; follow-up on geochemical soil anomalies by trenching & diamond drilling.
